Formative feedback occurs during an event or process. It allows for a continuous flow of information while the lesson is occurring, thereby allowing the teacher to tweak the lesson to meet students' needs.
Summative feedback occurs at the end of the lesson. This allows a teacher to revise each step of the process after everything has been completed for better implementation in the future.
Formative feedback ensures a continous flow of information and also allows for adjusting the information. Summative feedback sreves as a final check once all the steps are completed.

The way I understand it, "formative" is just along the way, while you are teaching, to see how everything is going; "summative" is a final assessment to see how the whole lesson got through...or didn't....
